About this Event
Indigenous LGBQTI+SB people deal with additional societal challenges, ones that can regularly intersect, contributing to the heightened development of depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug problems, and a heightened risk of suicide and suicidal behaviour
The session
Dameyon will highlight why this particular marginalised group is at an elevated risk of suicide, looking at determinants and risk factors that are specific to Indigenous and LGBTIQ+ people independently and explain how these intersect.
In this session, Dameyon will share the birthing of his body of work that began while working in remote Indigenous communities and being Indigenous and gay working the front-line in suicide prevention. He will discuss the how his report ‘Voices of the Black Rainbow’ and his first of its kind Indigenous Queer Cultural Competency training “Inclusive Practices” – developed in 2015 – has been a catalyst for three research projects currently underway that focus on the Indigenous LGBQTI+SB.
Dameyon will also share personal insight into what it is to be Indigenous and Queer working across mainstream, Indigenous and LGBTIQ+ sectors, the challenges and wins, and the work that is still needed to be done.
All *registrations will receive a link to download his report ‘Voices of the Black Rainbow’, previously only available to purchase in hard copy (since sold out)
*Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, Trans, Intersex, Sistergirl, Brotherboy
